History of Cooperation between Kamianets-Podilskyi and Athens
The partnership between Kamianets-Podilskyi and Athens (Georgia, USA) is one of the areas of the community’s international cooperation. Cooperation between the two cities was initiated within the framework of the Community Partnerships Project, a U.S.-Ukrainian programme aimed at developing contacts between local government authorities in Ukraine and the United States. According to materials on Kamianets-Podilskyi’s international relations, cooperation with Athens dates back to 1999.
Municipal Partnership
At the initial stage, cooperation was primarily focused on the exchange of experience in local government and economic development. Kamianets-Podilskyi and Athens were among the Ukrainian and American communities participating in the Community Partnerships Project. The programme provided opportunities for exchanging experience, developing municipal governance, establishing direct contacts between community representatives, and learning about local development practices.
One of the practical outcomes of this cooperation was an economic assessment of Kamianets-Podilskyi, conducted with the support of its American partner city. Its aim was to contribute to the community’s economic development, particularly through the development of tourism and the preservation of its historical heritage.
Partnership in the Modern Period
The partnership between Athens and Kamianets-Podilskyi remains in place. Athens is listed among the partner cities on the official investment portal of the Kamianets-Podilskyi community, while the City Council also includes Athens, Georgia, among its international partners.
In October 2024, the Kamianets-Podilskyi City Council officially addressed its partner cities, including the municipality of Athens, Georgia, calling on them to support the Victory Plan of Ukraine and to appeal to their respective national governments in support of the Plan. This demonstrates the continuation of the partnership dialogue between the two communities and the involvement of Athens in the broader network of international support for Kamianets-Podilskyi.
Cooperation between Kamianets-Podilskyi and Athens has developed as a partnership focused on the exchange of experience in local government, economic development, tourism, the preservation of historical heritage, and the development of international contacts. Today, Athens remains among the official international partners of Kamianets-Podilskyi, providing a foundation for maintaining contacts and further developing cooperation.
