Mariestad

Partnership relations between Kamianets-Podilskyi and Mariestad are one of the areas of the community’s international cooperation with Swedish municipalities. Mariestad is officially listed among Kamianets-Podilskyi’s partner cities, and information about the partnership is also presented on international platforms that bring together municipalities from the Baltic region.

Development of Partnership Relations

Cooperation between the two communities involves maintaining inter-municipal contacts, exchanging experience, and developing joint initiatives. Mariestad is one of Kamianets-Podilskyi’s Swedish partners, as confirmed by official materials from the Kamianets-Podilskyi City Council and the Municipality of Mariestad.

The partnership has gained particular importance in the context of strengthening ties between Ukrainian and Swedish communities. In 2021, the Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD) listed Kamianets-Podilskyi and Mariestad among the municipalities involved in partnership cooperation in Eastern Europe.

Intermunicipal Exchange and Local Development

One of the important areas of cooperation is the exchange of experience in local government and community development. Swedish experience in municipal governance, planning, and sustainable development is of practical interest to Kamianets-Podilskyi.

Support for Ukraine and Partnership Dialogue

Following the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, contacts between Ukrainian and Swedish municipalities became particularly important. In March 2022, the Swedish radio station Sveriges Radio reported that Mariestad had a partnership with Kamianets-Podilskyi, and that the municipality was discussing the importance of maintaining contact with its Ukrainian partner during the war.

In addition, in October 2024, the Kamianets-Podilskyi City Council officially addressed Mariestad, as a partner city, calling for support for Ukraine and for the Victory Plan presented by the President of Ukraine.

Partnership relations between Kamianets-Podilskyi and Mariestad contribute to the development of international contacts and stronger cooperation between the two communities. Joint meetings, the exchange of experience, and professional contacts provide a solid foundation for the further development of cooperation, implementation of joint initiatives, and establishment of new areas of interaction.
